CCIE Routing and Switching Written Exam 350-001 is a two-hour, multiple choice test with 100 questions covering Routing and Switching networking theory related to topics such as IP, IP routing, non-IP desktop protocols, bridging and switch-related technologies, and includes some equipment commands. The 350-001 exam is closed book and no outside reference materials are allowed.
Beta Exams
Each written exam version is offered first in beta form at a discounted cost of US$50. Beta exams are scheduled as you would other written exams and are available at all worldwide testing locations. A passing grade on the beta qualifies a candidate to schedule the lab exam. Results, however, are typically not available until six to eight weeks after the close of the beta. A candidate may attempt the beta exam only once during the beta period.
Cost
Written exams are administered by independent vendors at cost of US$315. Costs may vary due to exchange rates and local taxes (VAT, GST).
Expiration
Candidates must make an initial attempt of the CCIE lab exam within 18 months of passing the CCIE written exam. Valid passing scores on written exams expire after 18 months.
Locations
Written exams are taken at any worldwide VUE testing facility. See their websites for more details.
Results
Written exam results are Pass/Fail and are available immediately following the exam. The passing score is set by statistical analysis and is subject to periodic change.
Retakes
Candidates must wait five days between attempts at the written exam. Once a candidate has passed the exam, he or she may not take the same exam again (for recertification purposes) for at least 180 days.

Novell certification resultes in a 13 percent salary increase—equivalent to a $7,080 increase and return on certification investment. With its CNA and CNE certifications, Novell provides its certification holders with a salary increase that is 23 percent higher than the average certification program. Due to higher base salaries, Oracle certificants do not receive as large of a percentage increase as Novell professionals, but the Oracle certification-related salary increases are larger in terms of dollars. The average Oracle certification holder’s salary is $62,000, compared to the average Novell certification holder’s salary of $54,500. Regardless of the percentages, Oracle’s predominant OCP certification shows 28 percent more money than the average certification program measured. Professionals with Lotus certifications enjoy an average 10.1 percent increase in annual salary, an increase below the average percentage increase. However, Lotus certification–predominantly the Lotus CLP and CLS certifications–resultes in an above-par dollar return. The average Lotus certificant sees a salary increase of $6,168 after certification. Hewlett-Packard certification contributes to an 11.1 percent salary increase—equivalent to a $6,098 salary increase and return on certification investment. Hewlett-Packard’s Technical Support and Repair certification, along with its IT Professional Systems Administrator certification, provides professionals with a modest 5 percent higher salary increase than the average certification. CompTIA certification holders have the least return on certification investment. Its A+ certification was one of the most-often-held certifications, and both it and Network+ provide a 10.9 percent increase in salary, netting professionals a $5,058 salary increase ?3 percent below the average certification measured. Figure 4 shows the average salary increase by certification program. |
